Heat Pump Servicing in Bristol
An annual service keeps a heat pump efficient and its warranty valid. Here's what a proper service covers, what it costs in Bristol, and the local issues a good engineer will look for.

-
Usually once a year
most manufacturers make an annual service by a qualified engineer a condition of the extended warranty.
-
Typically £120–£250
for a standard annual service in the Bristol area, depending on the system and access.
-
Efficiency, checked
a good service compares today's performance with the figures recorded when your system was commissioned.
What a proper annual service includes
A heat pump service isn't the same as a boiler service. There's no combustion to check, but there is a refrigerant circuit, a water circuit, electrics and controls. A thorough service covers all four.
-
Outdoor unit
Clean the coil and fins, check the fan and its mounting, clear leaves and debris, and make sure condensate and defrost water drain away. Bristol's leafy streets mean autumn debris is a regular finding.
-
Refrigerant circuit
Check operating pressures and temperatures against the manufacturer's figures. Any work opening the circuit needs an F-Gas certified engineer.
-
Water circuit
Check system pressure, clean the magnetic filter, test inhibitor levels and look for leaks. Older Bristol heating systems often shed sludge into the filter for the first few years.
-
Hot water cylinder
Test the cylinder's temperature and pressure relief valves, check the expansion vessel, and look for scale on the coil. Bristol Water's hard, limestone-fed supply makes this check important.
-
Electrics and controls
Inspect connections, check the controller's fault log, confirm the weather compensation settings, and update software where available.
-
Performance check
Compare flow temperatures and efficiency with the commissioning record, and recommend any adjustments.
What it costs
In the Bristol area, a standard annual service typically costs £120–£250. Larger or more complex systems, or hard-to-reach outdoor units on steep or terraced gardens, can cost more. Parts, such as a replacement filter or valve, are extra.
Some installers offer the first service as part of the installation price. Others offer a plan that includes the annual visit; see our maintenance page for how to judge whether a plan is worth it.
When to book
- Late summer or early autumn, before the heating season, is ideal. Engineers are less busy and any issues are fixed before you need the heat.
- Around the anniversary of installation, if your warranty specifies an interval.
- After a fault or a change in performance, such as higher bills or slower hot water.
What you should receive afterwards
- a written service record with readings and findings
- a note of any parts replaced and recommendations
- confirmation the service meets your manufacturer's warranty requirements
Keep these with your MCS certificate. Warranty claims and future house sales both rely on them.
Who should service it
Choose an engineer trained on heat pumps, ideally on your brand. Many manufacturers require servicing by an approved or MCS-certified installer to keep the extended warranty. Refrigerant work requires F-Gas certification. Brands commonly fitted in Bristol include:
- Vaillant aroTHERM plus
- Mitsubishi Electric Ecodan
- Daikin Altherma
- Samsung EHS
- Grant Aerona
- Worcester Bosch
Servicing questions
Does a heat pump really need servicing every year?
Most manufacturers require it to keep the extended warranty, and a yearly check keeps efficiency up. Heat pumps have fewer wearing parts than gas boilers, but filters clog, coils get dirty and settings drift.
How long does a service take?
Typically one to two hours for a standard domestic system.
Will the heating be off during the service?
Briefly, while the engineer checks components. Plan for an hour or so without heating or hot water.
Can I do any maintenance myself?
Yes: keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow, check the system pressure gauge now and then, and note any error codes. Leave anything inside the unit to an engineer.
Why does hard water matter for servicing?
Bristol's water is moderately hard to very hard. Scale on the cylinder coil slows hot water reheating and wastes energy, so the service should check for it and recommend descaling or a scale reducer if needed.
What if my installer has stopped trading?
Another heat pump-trained engineer can take over servicing. Have your MCS certificate and commissioning record ready so they can check against the original figures.
